Why does the Knesset keep playing these vote game…

Why does the Knesset keep playing these vote games?

Why does the Knesset keep playing these vote games?
It's wild how every time there's a close vote, someone suddenly "accidentally" starts documenting who voted what. Like, we're not all five years old trying to rat each other out in class. If the coalition wanted transparency, they'd just do it openly instead of halting revotes mid-process when the optics get bad.

I've watched this happen twice now in the same session—first with the budget, now with whatever fresh disaster they're trying to push through. Makes you wonder what they're so afraid of.

Anyone else tired of this cat-and-mouse act, or is it just me seeing the pattern here?

Seen it before in various forms. we had that with the coalition-building after the 94 elections, where the Israeli PM was basically unable to form a gov for weeks (months?) due to all the political posturing - still trying to figure out how that was "solved"

Coalition building is all about the art of not losing you know like a game of musical chairs but with more shouting and less chairs fr fr

Wonder if it’s just me but the way they keep calling votes right before recess feels like they’re gaming the system to avoid real debate—like when my roommate would "accidentally" schedule plans during my big talk

AN Andrei Novikov 2 months ago
recess isnt a vote delay tactic its actually because THEY have limited hours in session ngl

yeah remember a few years back when Lieberman pulled the same stunt and almost derailed the budget for like 3 months over a single plank in the coalition agreement just had to be dragged to a vote by Netanyahu *(edited)*

Not sure to be honest - it seems like a way for smaller parties to get power without having a real chance at coalition, kinda like a strategic coalition-broker role

Oh, here we go again. Another week, another round of "let's see if we can make this work this time" while half the coalition is already texting their donors about the next election. 🔥

idk if this is even related but the whole israeli electoral system is kinda rigged to prioritize coalition government over actual party representation, so that's probably where the vote games come from.
7
MI Min Zhang 2 months ago
It's related the proportional representation system they use can lead to multiple small parties holding power which creates coalition govt and all that entails iykyk

AN Andrei Novikov 2 months ago
Yeah, but what’s the alternative? You think the opposition *wants* these games? They’re stuck in the same system where every vote is a hostage situation because the coalition’s majority is thinner than a sheet of paper. The real question is why voters keep electing parties that can’t even agree on basic math, let alone policy

SA Sakura Yamaguchi 2 months ago
Yeah no the opposition plays seperate separate* games just as much as the coalition they both know whats happening and whats the point of pretending otherwise when they all benefit from the chaos
1
EM Emeka Kamara 2 months ago
yeah but the opposition isnt some helpless bystander theyre actively PLAYING these games too and if they really wanted it to stop theyd just vote wiht the coalit..
2
SA Sade Ogundimu 2 months ago
thats not really the question tho – we're talking about the system not the opposition's desires, or lack thereof ngl

Let's not focus on 'vote games' as the root issue — we're IGNORING the systemic dysfunction within the Israeli political structure imo 💯

Where's actual coalition reform in legislation?
29
NA Natasha Morozov 2 months ago
Actual reform starts with ADDRESSING corruption *(edited)*
1
SA Sade Ogundimu 2 months ago
yeah but the real issue isnt the games its that the coalition keeps collapsing because they cant actually govern—like how do you reform anything when your whole SYSTEM is built on temporary alliances and backroom deals

LO Logan Thomas 2 months ago
we're focusing on the mechanics of the system instead of the incentives that create this behavior why are kabinet members incentivized to form unstable coalitions *(edited)*

just watched some knesset livestreams lmao and they make it seem like they're playing some kinda legislative game of chicken, like "we'll pass it but only if u give us THIS thing we hate" lol *(edited)*

Idk why this isn't talked about more but it kinda reminds me of what happens in teh Knesset when they play vote games - it's super frustrating. what's weird is that in a parliamentary system like Israel's, the governing coalition usually has a majority and in theory they should be able to pass LAWS without games like that, so i'm thinking - is part of the problem that there's so many small parties in the Knesset? doesn't that create an incentive for those parties to flex their power whenever possible?

LO Lorenzo Ricci 2 months ago
first time posting but been kinda stuck on this whole knesset thing and idk if i'm wrong but it feels like they're playin these vote games to delay stuff so they can't actually get crucified for votin against somethin. like, instead of just votin nay and takin the consequences, they can kinda sidestep the whole thing by votin against something, then votin for some minor tweak that still keeps the original bill alive. does that sound about right to anyone? lmao

edit: yes i know i said the same thing twice. it's called emphasis

man, I remember back in 2015 when Netanyahu’s coalition was holding together by a thread and every vote felt like a hostage situation—some MK literally got rushed to the hospital mid-session because the math was that tight. It’s not just games, it’s survival mode when your majority is thinner than a Knesset member’s patience on a Friday afternoon.

Reminds me of this time I volunteered for a community center in London and teh committee would always vote on who got to lead the 'world music night' event – always felt like everyone was playing politics, not actually considering what would be best for the community.. *(edited)*

I've been following the knesset stuff in the background, and i noticed they keep doing these repeat votes on the same bills. wonder if anyone's actually studying the psychological effects of those repeated no votes on lawmakers? do we know if they even care about the actual outcome, or if it's just a way to stall and save face??
12
SA Sade Ogundimu 2 months ago
that's crazy

KA Kaito Yamamoto 2 months ago
I actually agree that the Knesset's vote games are frustrating, but what about when they pass a bill by a narrow margin and then get to claim it's a bipartisan effort even though the opposition was still pretty split?
