Teslaโ€™s decision to stop selling its solar roof in the United States has rattled the industry, sending a shockwave through a market that still struggles to gain traction. The move came after disappointing sales and a lawsuit over sudden price hikes, and it followed the withdrawal of several other manufacturers. The announcement has left many wondering whether the future of roofโ€‘integrated solar panels is in jeopardy, or whether it opens new opportunities for smaller players.

The main hurdle for solar tiles has always been their appearance and cost. Many homeowners dislike the look of conventional panels, so solar roofs that mimic ordinary shingles were created. Yet the aesthetic advantage is offset by higher prices and more complex installation. Each roof is unique, so the tiles must be engineered and fitted to the specific shape and slope, driving up labour and parts costs. Building regulations are stricter for integrated systems, and roofers, installers and electricians must coordinate more closely than with standard panels. The extra time and paperwork can make a single solar roof cost twice as much as a conventional photovoltaic system.

Small manufacturers are trying to break the pattern. Swiss firm Freesuns, for example, has seen sales grow 20โ€‘30% since 2019 and is now looking to enter the U.S. market. Its CEO, Deborah Learoyd, says unit costs are slowly falling, but the need for custom engineering keeps prices high. Maintenance is also more difficult. Traditional panels have a map that shows each moduleโ€™s output, so a fault is easy to spot. Solar shingles hide the electronics, so technicians rely on thermal cameras and must carefully avoid walking on the tiles to prevent microโ€‘fractures. Because of these challenges, companies like Kate Collardsonโ€™s Solar Service of Colorado charge more for repairs than they do for standard solar panels.

What comes next could reshape the solar roof market. If larger firms retreat, niche players may step in, but they will need to find ways to reduce costs and simplify installation. The industry could also see new regulations that streamline approvals or incentives that make the higher upfront price more palatable. For now, the decision to pull back on solar roofs has highlighted the gap between consumer desire for clean energy and the practical realities of delivering it through buildingโ€‘integrated technology.
